Tree Removal in Ladysmith

When a tree comes down in sections

Sectional dismantling is what happens when there is nowhere for a trunk to land. A climber or a lift takes the top out first, then works down the stem, rigging each piece to a rope so nothing drops free. It is slower than felling, and it is why two trees of the same height can be quoted a thousand dollars apart.

Lean, decay and what sits underneath decide the method. On a doubtful tree that judgement belongs in a written danger tree assessment before anyone leaves the ground.

Permits, and where they actually apply

The Town of Ladysmith's Tree Cutting Regulation Bylaw, 1979, No. 695 covers land set aside as a park, greenbelt or public area. Private property is not in it. What does bite is a Development Permit Area — DPA 8 requires a tree preservation plan, and across the boundary in North Cowichan, DPA-3 and DPA-4 carry cutting restrictions on a municipality that otherwise states plainly it has no tree protection bylaw.

In Cedar and Yellow Point the Regional District of Nanaimo goes further. Bylaw No. 500 treats the removal of vegetation, trees included, as a development permit matter across six areas, and exempts trees that a certified arborist or Registered Professional Forester deems hazardous and an imminent threat to buildings or life safety.

Local conditions

Ladysmith runs up a slope above its harbour, so the older lots on the hill sit under second-growth Douglas fir left from the townsite's logging years — tall, heavy, and usually within reach of a roof or a service line. Closer to the water, arbutus and Garry oak bring the opposite problem: smaller trees on ground a machine cannot get onto.

Common questions

What makes one removal cost more than another?

Room to work, mostly. A tree with a clear drop zone is felled in one piece. The same tree over a roof is dismantled from the top and rigged down, which takes hours longer and needs more people on the ground.

Does the stump come out at the same time?

Only if it is quoted that way. Felling and grinding are separate operations with separate machines, and plenty of properties leave the stump in place where nothing is going back over the ground.
