Danger Tree Assessment in Ladysmith

Ladysmith Tree Removal writes a danger tree assessment across the Cowichan Valley. An assessment is a judgement written down: what the tree is doing, what it would hit, and how likely that is. It gives an insurer, a neighbour or a regional district something they can act on. The report is dated and signed by the arborist who wrote it.

What an assessment looks at

We record three key factors: the structural defect, the target beneath it, and the likelihood of failure. A lean on its own means very little — a fir that grew with a lean is often sounder than a vertical one that has just started to move. Decay at the base, a lifted root plate, fungal brackets and cracks in the stem are what change the answer.

Target is the other half. A tree that would fall into open pasture is a different case from the same tree over a driveway, and the assessment says which, in writing, before anyone quotes a tree removal.

Where an assessment does regulatory work

In Cedar and Yellow Point, the Regional District of Nanaimo's Bylaw No. 500 makes removing vegetation a development permit matter across six areas — and exempts trees that a certified arborist or Registered Professional Forester deems hazardous and an imminent threat to buildings or life safety. The assessment is the exemption.

Saltair works differently. The Electoral Area G Official Community Plan, Bylaw No. 2500, states that no person shall alter land, including the removal of trees, inside the Stream Protection Development Permit Area before the owner receives a development permit. An assessment does not replace that permit, and saying so up front saves a wasted application.

Common questions

Does an assessment mean the tree has to come down?

No. Plenty of reports end in a crown reduction, a brace, or a note to look again in two years.

Will an insurer accept a written assessment?

Is an assessment needed to remove a hazardous tree?
