Windthrow, hangers and broken tops

Windthrow is a whole tree over with the root plate lifted, often still attached and still under tension. A hanger is a limb that has broken free and lodged in the canopy — the one that hurts people, because it looks stable and is not. A broken top is a stem snapped part way up, leaving a spar to be climbed or reached rather than felled.

Each is cut differently, and none of them is a chainsaw-from-a-ladder job. We release the tension in a fallen stem in a set order, because out of order the trunk moves on its own. A tree still standing but leaning into a new position after a storm is a case for a danger tree assessment rather than a saw.

What the weather actually does here

Winter storms on this coast arrive from the southeast, so the exposed side of a hill lot takes the load and the trees that come down tend to come down the same way. Ground saturated by weeks of rain is the other half of it — a root plate that would hold in August lifts in December.

The BC Wildlife Act and the Migratory Bird Convention Act still apply after a storm. Nesting runs from late March to mid-August, mostly outside storm season, so the two rarely collide. Where a property sits inside a development permit area, that applies after a storm as well.

Local conditions

Ladysmith's hill lots take the southeasterly straight on, and the second-growth fir above the older streets grew tall inside shelter that a neighbouring removal can take away. A tree that has stood for decades can fail in the first winter after the lot next door is cleared.

A branch is caught up in the canopy — can it wait?

No. A hanger is the most dangerous thing on a storm-damaged property because it looks settled and is held by nothing. Keep people and vehicles out from under it until it is down.

Does insurance cover storm tree work?

It depends on the policy and on what the tree hit. We write a dated assessment of the tree's condition before cutting or hauling the wood away.

The tree is still standing but leaning — is that a problem?

Often, yes. A stem that has moved has a root plate that has moved with it, and the ground around the base is where that shows. That is an assessment, not a wait-and-see.
