Stump Grinding in Ladysmith

Grinding, not digging

A grinder takes the stump down in passes, throwing chips as it goes, and stops at whatever depth the job needs. Nothing is excavated, so a retaining wall or a driveway edge a foot away stays where it is. The chips and the ground root material go back into the void or get carted off with the rest.

We quote stump grinding separately from tree removal because it requires a dedicated machine, usually a separate visit, and its own access check.

How deep does a stump need to be ground?

How deep we grind depends on what's going back over the ground afterward. Turf needs less depth than paving, paving needs less than a slab, and anything structural means chasing the root plate out instead of just grinding the stump. Local conditions

Older lots on the hill were cut into the slope, so a stump can sit within a foot of a retaining wall or a driveway edge. Grinding is often the only method that takes the wood out without disturbing what is holding the bank up.

Common questions

How far below the surface does grinding go?

As far as the finished ground needs. Replanting turf takes less depth than laying paving, and anything being built on takes more again. We agree on the grinding depth with you before bringing the machine to your property.

What is left behind?

A void filled with wood chips and ground root material. It can be left as backfill, topped with soil for planting, or carted away if something solid is going over the top.

Can a stump beside a fence or a wall be ground?

Usually, with a narrower machine. Gate width, the slope and how soft the ground is matter more than the size of the stump. A wider machine works faster where the gate allows it.
